In the supplementary chargesheet filed by the Pune police on the Bhima Koregaon violence case, the state has once again failed to establish that the arrested activists were involved in the violence. The chargesheet mostly relies on statements by the three surrendered naxals trying to link the activists with Maoist activities.

Twenty members of European parliament have written to the Indian government and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) expressing concern over the crackdown on human rights defenders. They have urged India to create a more open civil society space.

The convention also recognised the failure of the criminal justice system in the country, and talked about various draconian laws that are still being used to silence the voices of dissent.
The three-day convention was attended by 150 people from eleven states. In the light of the ongoing onslaught on the rights of various communities, attack on freedom of expression, and speech and growing intolerance in the country, the theme of the convention was ‘Threats and challenges to the idea of pluralism, democracy and the constitution’.

Elgar Parishad case: HC reserves order on bail plea of activist Sudha Bharadwaj

Bharadwaj, a professor at NLU, Delhi, was arrested on October 27, 2018, for allegedly being part of a banned Maoist organisation and inciting violence after the Elgar Parishad was held in Pune. The Bombay high court (HC) on Thursday reserved the order on the bail application of civil rights activist Sudha Bharadwaj, who was arrested by the Pune police in connection with the Elgar Parishad case. Justice Nitin Sambre said he will pronounce the order on March 11.
