Mumbai: The inquiry commission set up in Maharashtra to investigate the Koregaon-Bhima riots could call former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, one of the petitioners before the commissioner told reporters. The commission is headed by former Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court JN Patel and former Maharashtra Chief Secretary Sumit Malik and was set up to conduct an inquiry into the riot that took place in Koregaon Bhima on January 1, 2018.

MUMBAI: A day after the Centre transferred the politically sensitive Bhima Koregaon case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar said on Saturday that the Union government’s decision smacks of conspiracy to cover up the role of the previous government in the state led by the BJP in misusing the police machinery to frame social activists. Pawar, whose party is a coalition partner in the Shiv Sena – led government in Maharashtra, said the state will not remain a mute spectator and will do its own probe so that the truth comes out.

Mumbai: Crushing any hope that the Maharashtra state government may release the rights activists and lawyers implicated in the 2018 Bhima Koregaon case, the Ministry of Home Affairs on Friday abruptly decided to hand the investigations over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The NIA Act allows the department to take over any investigations related to “scheduled offences” and the state has little role to play, leave alone decline permission.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the probe into the 2018 Koregaon-Bhima violence today, a day after the Maharashtra government held a review meeting with senior Pune police officers to take a call on pursuing the matter.
