Statement by Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA)

Today morning at 6:30 am, the house of Dr. Hany Babu who lives in Noida, was raided by a contingent of Pune Police for six hours without a search warrant. They searched the entire house and took away all electronic devices, laptops, pen drives, mobile phone, etc. At the end of the search, the Pune Police claimed that the raid was in connection with the Bhima Koreagaon case.

Mumbai: A team of Pune police conducted raids on Delhi University associate professor Hany Babu M.T’s residence for more than six hours in connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence case on Tuesday, September 10. The police team, comprising more than 12 personnel, reached Babu’s Noida house at around 6 am.

As soon as I read the word UAPA, comes to my mind the arrest of five human rights activists: Arun Ferreira, Gautam Navlakha, Varavara Rao, Sudha Bharadwaj and Varun Gonsalves, who were arrested last year under this Act without any stark evidence by the police who could not explain the reason for arresting these activists. These human rights defenders were termed as “maoists” and “deshdrohis (anti-national)” by the BJP government.

Sudha Bharadwaj was arrested by the Pune City Police on August 28, last year, in connection with the Elgaar Parishad case, for her alleged links with the banned CPI-Maoist.
While arguing in favour of her bail application before the Bombay High Court, an advocate representing activist Sudha Bharadwaj said on Friday that not a single document relied upon by the Pune Police against her was recovered from her electronic devices.
