Witchhunt of Professors and intellectuals continues. Both Vijayan and Ranjan have made important intellectual contributions to anti-caste and democratic thought.
P.K. Vijayan and Rakesh Ranjan were summoned for interrogation by the NIA in connection to the Bhima Koregaon case. The summon, which was dated August 13, has asked him to appear at the NIA headquarters in New Delhi on August 14. Vijayan and Ranjan are both professors at Delhi University and have been teaching for years. They have made important intellectual contributions to anti-caste and democratic thought.

Mumbai: The National Investigation Agency (NIA), investigating the Elgar Parishad case, has issued summons to Prem Kumar Vijayan, who teaches English at Hindu College, Delhi University. Vijayan has been summoned to the agency’s Delhi office on August 14.

We, the students, teachers and members of the academic community are alarmed by the summons issued to Prof. Prem Kumar Vijayan of Hindu College, Delhi University by the NIA to join the ongoing investigation into the Bhima Koregaon case on Friday, 14th August. Recently, Prof. Hany Babu of English Department, Delhi University had also been summoned similarly by the NIA and arrested under draconian UAPA charges in the expanding Bhima Koregaon witch hunt of progressive teachers, journalists, lawyers, cultural and social activists.

The police said the students were defying prohibitory orders and physical distancing norms.
The Delhi Police on Wednesday booked six students for protesting against the arrest of Delhi University professor MT Hany Babu and defying prohibitory orders, PTI reported. Babu was arrested by the National Investigation Agency on July 28 in connection with the Bhima Koregaon case. Babu is an associate professor of English at Delhi University and a well-known anti-caste activist.

It is a common practice all over the world that when those incarcerated face a threat to life, the authorities send them home
It is a sign of the times that our present Central government does not feel the need to follow this practice of releasing prisoners even when their lives are at risk. Varavara Rao, a 79-year-old accused in the Bhima-Koregaon case, has been in jail for two years, where his health had broken down even before the pandemic; matters are worse now because he has tested positive for Covid-19. Yet the government has made no announcement till date about his release after he is discharged from hospital; and this is so notwithstanding the fact that he is merely awaiting trial and has not been convicted of any crime.

We are grateful to the PUCL for taking up the cases of all human rights defenders in Chhattisgarh and for informing us about the NHRC order. It is deeply distressing that PUCL Secretary and Advocate Sudha Bhardwaj who took up such cases in Chhattisgarh has herself been arrested under false charges. We trust that all human rights defenders who have been falsely accused will get justice.
