The constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of speech and expression, association and assembly are under severe threat. Several people across the country have been criminalized in false and fabricated cases.

Online Petition: Release Varavara Rao Immediately

The 79-year old renowned poet and public intellectual Varavara Rao, along with four others, was arrested by police on August 28, 2018 on fabricated charges and Supreme Court of India intervened and directed the police to keep all the arrested under ‘house arrest’, pending legal reliefs. Finally he was arrested on November 17, 2018 and imprisoned in Yerawada Central Prison, Pune since then.

Presently incarcerated in a jail in Pune, people’s lawyer Sudha Bharadwaj has been honoured by Harvard University, for her contribution towards law and policy. The National Secretary of the Peoples Union for Civil Liberties has been placed 5th in rank amongst 21 prominent women across the globe. Harvard University has previously honoured Angela Davis and Hillary Clinton.

The convention also recognised the failure of the criminal justice system in the country, and talked about various draconian laws that are still being used to silence the voices of dissent.
The three-day convention was attended by 150 people from eleven states. In the light of the ongoing onslaught on the rights of various communities, attack on freedom of expression, and speech and growing intolerance in the country, the theme of the convention was ‘Threats and challenges to the idea of pluralism, democracy and the constitution’.
