Peoples Union of Democratic Rights (PUDR) welcomes the Supreme Court’s order on the petition filed by Prof. Romila Thapar and others for extending protection from custody to the five activists- Gautam Navlakha, Varavara Rao, Vernon Gonsalves, Sudha Bhardwaj and Arun Ferreira- arrested a month ago by the Maharashtra Police. A three-judge bench in its 2:1 majority judgment, even in refusing the demand of the petitioners for constituting a Special Investigating Team, recognised the damage to individuals that can be caused by such arbitrary arrests and has enabled every possible challenge to this power before the appropriate courts to secure personal liberty of the five activists.

The Association has demanded that the state address the violation of human rights in an academic space.
Following the raids by the Pune police in many states on Tuesday, where they arrested poets, writers and activists, accusing them of being “Maoist sympathisers”, the English and Foreign Languages University Teachers Association has strongly condemned the arrest of Professor Satyanarayana. Satyanarayana, whose residence was raided on Tuesday morning, is an anti-caste activist and head of the Department of Cultural Studies in EFLU.

A police team raided K. Satyanarayana’s house on August 28. While the search documents claimed the professor’s father-in-law Varavara Rao was living there, another Pune police team was raiding the house where Rao actually lives at the same time.
Days after the Pune police raided the house of 51-year-old professor K. Satyanarayana at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) campus in Hyderabad, he has decided to move the Supreme Court against the “injustice and humiliation” he had to endure.

Statement condemning concerted persecution of democratic rights activists

On 28th August, 2018 the Pune Police swooped down on prominent rights activists of the country: Sudha Bharadwaj, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, Gautam Navalakha, and Varavara Rao. They were to be taken to Pune on the fabricated charge of being linked to CPI (Maoist) party and funding Elgar Parishad. At the same time, premises of Stan Swamy and Anand Teltumbde were also raided, and both have been shown as “suspected accused” under various sections of the UAPA. All of the arrested and accused are long-standing contributors to various public discussion fora, including Sanhati, espousing their commitment to the people and democracy.
