To the authorities, it is an offense whenever anyone raises voice against repression and torture on the poor, indigenous, fallen, mostly identified as Dalit, people and nationalities smaller in number. To the authorities, it is considered an offense whenever someone stands by these people. Social and human rights activists raising voices of protest against repression on these people are being sued under repressive laws. They are either arrested or threatened with arrests. Names of a few of such personalities are already in the media. They include Sudha Bharadwaj, Varavara Rao, Gautam Navlakha, Vernon Gonsalves, Arun Ferreira, Father Stan Swamy, Anand Teltumbde, Surendra Gadgil, Sudhir Dhawale, Rona Wilson, Mahesh Raut, Shoma Sen. They are from different parts of the country: Delhi, Haryana, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Goa, Ranchi, Nagpur, or in some other places. There are many such personalities, whose names are not found in media.
We appeal to all to join this convention for opposing such repressive measures.

The convention also recognised the failure of the criminal justice system in the country, and talked about various draconian laws that are still being used to silence the voices of dissent.
The three-day convention was attended by 150 people from eleven states. In the light of the ongoing onslaught on the rights of various communities, attack on freedom of expression, and speech and growing intolerance in the country, the theme of the convention was ‘Threats and challenges to the idea of pluralism, democracy and the constitution’.

For over a year now, we have witnessed a political and legal battle over the right to dissent. It began with the right of dalits, bahujans, adivasis, Muslims, women and thousands from marginalised communities across the country to congregate at Koregaon on the banks of Bhima River near Pune to commemorate a battle fought two centuries ago. This, commemorated as an annual event, is a symbolic assertion of the historically oppressed Mahars against the dominant caste order of the Peshwas. This assertion by the most marginalised communities seemed to rankle the establishment.
