Maharashtra government has constituted a two-member committee on Monday to probe into the complaints of phone tapping made by a number of political leaders including Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Chief Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut. They have alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) used police machinery to keep a watch on political opponents especially during the formation of the new three-party government in state.

Panel probing Bhima Koregaon violence given 2-month extension

A day after the two-member commission probing the 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence threatened to wind up prematurely due to the government’s failure to release the necessary funds, the state has released the dues and announced an inquiry into the delay. The panel has also been given an extension of two months to complete its probe.

With the state state government not being able to provide funds and salaries to the members of Koregaon Bhima commission, the body has stated that it will not be able to function in such a scenario. Dalit activists have written to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackery, , demanding that the government immediately take steps to rectify this and have alleged that this lapse makes it clear that the commission was constituted as just an eyewash by the previous government.

Mumbai: The inquiry commission set up in Maharashtra to investigate the Koregaon-Bhima riots could call former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, one of the petitioners before the commissioner told reporters.
