Bail plea hearings in Elgar Parishad case conclude

Advocate Gadling, conducting his own defence, was replying to public prosecutor Ujjwala Pawar’s arguments that sought to deny bail to him and the other activists arrested in the case.

The 79-year old renowned poet and public intellectual Varavara Rao, along with four others, was arrested by police on August 28, 2018 on fabricated charges and Supreme Court of India intervened and directed the police to keep all the arrested under ‘house arrest’, pending legal reliefs. Finally he was arrested on November 17, 2018 and imprisoned in Yerawada Central Prison, Pune since then.

Judgment is to be pronounced tomorrow, February 13, 2019, by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul of the Supreme Court, which will pronounce judgment on the appeal file by Maharashtra government against the Bombay High Court decision refusing the cops a 90-day extension to file a chargesheet against the Bhima Koregaon arrestees, including Surendra Gadling, Mahesh Raut, Rona Wilson, Professor Shoma Sen and Sudhir Dhawale.
