A clear pattern of another well-coordinated and effectively designed digital attack has now emerged – this time through emails. These emails, all tailor-made to suit the interests of the individual receiver, were sent out between September and October 2019.

Sudha Bharadwaj, currently at Yerwada Jail in Pune, wrote this tribute to him in her letter to her daughter, Maaysha, dated September 15, 2019, and it is being published with her permission.
Sudha Bharadwaj is the general secretary of the Chhattisgarh PUCL and was one of the lawyers for the Sarkeguda case.

He is currently an acting member of the Global Commission on Drug Policy and is a member of the UNAIDS Reference Group on HIV and Human Rights while Ms. Jaising was part of the team of lawyers for the accused in the ongoing Bhima Koregaon case as well as the case against Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, where she successfully fought the plea of the CBI to seek his custodial interrogation.

PUCL strongly condemns the early morning raid today (12th June) by Maharashtra – Pune police in the residence of 83 year old Father Stan Swamy at Bagaicha Campus in Namkum, Ranchi, Jharkhand. The Maharashtra police allegedly conducted the raid and search without obtaining judicial search warrant and seized his computer’s hard disk, internet modem and other storage devices and forced him to give his gmail and Facebook passwords.

The convention also recognised the failure of the criminal justice system in the country, and talked about various draconian laws that are still being used to silence the voices of dissent.
The three-day convention was attended by 150 people from eleven states. In the light of the ongoing onslaught on the rights of various communities, attack on freedom of expression, and speech and growing intolerance in the country, the theme of the convention was ‘Threats and challenges to the idea of pluralism, democracy and the constitution’.
