Over 200 people gathered in Raipur, Chhattisgarh today under the banner of Campaign Against Repression on People’s Movements to mark one year of the arrest of Comrade and advocate Sudha Bharadwaj and other human rights activists arrested under false charges in the Bhima Koregaon case – Surendra Gadling, Sudhir Dhawale, Mahesh Raut, Vernon Gonsalves, Arun Ferreira, Shoma Sen, Rona Wilson, and Varavara Rao.

Representatives of several people’s organisations from across Jharkhand gathered today at Raj Bhawan to protest against the severe violations of Constitutional rights of Adivasis of Khunti district and the use of the sedition law as an instrument of repression. The dharna was organised by Jharkhand Janadhikar Mahasabha, a network of activists and people’s organisations.

Eminent theatre director from Karnataka S Raghunandana on Wednesday declined the Sangeet Natak Akademi award for 2018, a day after it was announced, in protest against incidents of “mob lynching in the name of God and religion” and the frequent attempts to stifle dissenting views of public intellectuals and activists.

A Protest Demonstration was organized today on 15th July 2019 at Budha Talab, Raipur against the illegal detention of Sudha Bhardwaj demanding her immediate release. Organized under the banner of Chhattsigarh Bachao Andolan, the day-long Dharna ended by submitting a Memorandum to the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh demanding the State Government to clarify their stand on the entire episode, and their positive intervention.

STOP HARASSMENT OF RIGHTS ACTIVISTS IN JHARKHAND
PUDR condemns the arrest warrant issued against Stan Swamy, Aloka Kujur, Vinod Kumar, Rakesh Roshan Kiro and Babita Kashyap on 19 June 2019, in relation to FIR filed on 26 July 2018 for waging war against the state, sedition, conspiracy, and Sections 66 and 66A IT Act based simply on their Facebook posts. The Jharkhand government had filed this FIR 124/ 2018 at Khunti PS against 20 writers, intellectuals and activists as part of the continued wave of repressive measures against the pathalgarhi movement in Jharkhand over June-July 2018, wherein more than 300 villagers have also been slapped with sedition cases without their knowledge, and there has been deployment of security forces, raids and constant surveillance over the past one year.

PUCL strongly condemns the early morning raid today (12th June) by Maharashtra – Pune police in the residence of 83 year old Father Stan Swamy at Bagaicha Campus in Namkum, Ranchi, Jharkhand. The Maharashtra police allegedly conducted the raid and search without obtaining judicial search warrant and seized his computer’s hard disk, internet modem and other storage devices and forced him to give his gmail and Facebook passwords.
