It has been eleven days since Varavara Rao’s family saw the physically weak and psychologically suffering poet on video conference and there is still no news from anywhere – hospital or jail.
It’s exactly one month since Varavara Rao’s family felt disturbed with his incoherent talk and began emergency efforts to bring the dreadful condition of his health to people’s notice, to appeal to all the systems of governance and to move judiciary seeking an immediate remedy to the risk to his life.

It is a common practice all over the world that when those incarcerated face a threat to life, the authorities send them home
It is a sign of the times that our present Central government does not feel the need to follow this practice of releasing prisoners even when their lives are at risk. Varavara Rao, a 79-year-old accused in the Bhima-Koregaon case, has been in jail for two years, where his health had broken down even before the pandemic; matters are worse now because he has tested positive for Covid-19. Yet the government has made no announcement till date about his release after he is discharged from hospital; and this is so notwithstanding the fact that he is merely awaiting trial and has not been convicted of any crime.

N Venugopal Rao is a writer and the nephew of Varavara Rao, the poet who has been arrested in the Bhima Koregaon case. Varavara was arrested two years ago along with 12 other activists. He has been repeatedly denied bail and has been in poor health for the past month, testing positive for Covid on July 16.

The NIA claimed that Tharayil was in touch with those connected to Manipur-based insurgent group Kangleipak Communist Party –Military Council (KCP – MC), a banned outfit.
The special National Investigation (NIA) court on Tuesday extended the custody of Hany Babu Musaliyarveettil Tharayil (54), an associate professor in the department of English with the Delhi University (DU) and accused in the Elgar Parishad/ Bhima Koregaon case, to the central probe agency until August 7 (Friday).

As per the Bombay High Court’s direction to Nanavati Hospital on July 28 to permit Varavara Rao’s family to visit him, subject to Hospital protocols and Government’s norms in respect of Covid patients, we, the family members were allowed to speak to him in a video conference, as protocols do not permit personal visits.
Thus through video conference we interacted with Varavara Rao for about twenty minutes in the afternoon of Friday, July 31. He looked much more frail and weak and his physical condition did not seem to be well.
