Mumbai: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday opposed the bail plea of activist Sudha Bharadwaj … in the Bombay High Court saying her ailments were not of serious nature … The HC, however, pointed out that a bench led by Chief Justice Dipankar Datta had presided over a PIL filed by the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) and had sent detailed guidelines for prison authorities across the state to ensure the safety of inmates in light of COVID-19 … the bench directed the Maharashtra government to submit Bharadwaj’s latest health report and an affidavit within a week clarifying how it proposed to implement safety guidelines and the court’s PUCL judgement in the Byculla prison to protect inmates.

P.K. Vijayan and Rakesh Ranjan were summoned for interrogation by the NIA in connection to the Bhima Koregaon case. The summon, which was dated August 13, has asked him to appear at the NIA headquarters in New Delhi on August 14. Vijayan and Ranjan are both professors at Delhi University and have been teaching for years. They have made important intellectual contributions to anti-caste and democratic thought.

We strongly condemn the unwarranted raid on 2nd August 2020 by officers of the National Intelligence Agency, on the house of Dr Hany Babu, a member of the Committee… The raid at his house, conducted on the 2nd morning, was ostensibly to collect material to corroborate the arrest. It defies all logic that the arrest of Dr Babu was made without sufficient basis, to the point that the NIA now finds itself searching for material to justify the arrest, post-facto and concocting false ”evidence” against him.

Rowena´s partner, Delhi University teacher Hany Babu M.T., was arrested in the case on July 28.
Mumbai: A team of ten officers – eight men and two women – from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) reached the residence of Dr Jenny Rowena, an associate professor at Miranda House, at 7:30 am on Sunday (August 2). The team searched her Noida residence as a part of the ongoing investigation in the Elgar Parishad case, in which Rowena’s partner Hany Babu M.T., Delhi University associate professor of English, was arrested on July 28.

According to sources, NIA arrived at Dr. Hany Babu and Dr. Jenny Rowena’s residence at 7.30 am today with a warrant under the pretext of evidence collection for Dr. Babu’s case. Dr. Rowena did not allow them to enter the house until her friends arrived.
The NIA came with two women officers and local reinforcements and left with hard disks and papers belonging to Prof. GN Sai Baba’s Defence Committee. Nothing belonging to Dr. Rowena and their daughter was taken.
