Anand Teltumbde, Dalit scholar and accused in the Bhima Koregaon – Elgar Parishad case has sought the special NIA court’s permission for temporary bail to visit his 90-year-old mother for 15 days following brother – Milind’s – death in an encounter.
A telephone conversation earlier permitted by the court did not materialise.
Milind, an alleged Maoist leader was killed in an encounter by security personnel in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district along with 26 others. Read more

The Special NIA Court has allowed Dalit scholar Anand Teltumbde a telephone call to his mother for five minutes on loud speaker after his brother and alleged Maoist leader Milind Teltumbde’s encounter killing by security personnel in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district.
In his plea to the Special NIA court, Teltumbde said his ninety-year-old mother is in a state of shock and bereavement after Milind’s demise and therefore he may be permitted a telephone call. Read more
Telugu poet Varavara Rao, an accused in the 2018 Elgar Parishad case, told the special NIA court in Mumbai on Tuesday that he was shifting from a high society flat in Mumbai to an ashram-like facility in Bandra as he was unable to afford rent.
Advocate Niraj Yadav, appearing for Rao, said his client would shift to an ashram-like facility which is right behind actor Shah Rukh Khan’s bungalow, Mannat. Read more

One of the consequences of this is that this privileged minority among Dalits begins to be characterized more by its new-found class mobility rather than by caste-based concerns. It is not surprising that Anand’s incarceration has not mobilized Dalit-Bahujan organizations; most of them believe that articulating such ‘abstract’ structural issues brings no concrete benefits to the Dalit-Bahujan cause. When 84-year-old Jharkhand-based tribal rights activist and Jesuit priest Father Stan Swamy passed away on July 5, one of his co-accused in the Elgar Parishad case, Sudhir Dhawale, penned an emotional poem. Dhawale, a writer and anti-caste activist from Mumbai who is currently jailed at the Taloja central prison, wrote an eight-page poem describing his first meeting with Swamy, their interactions in jail and Swamy’s contribution to the tribal rights movement in Jharkhand. In a significant challenge, Professor Anand Teltumbde, an accused in the Bhima Koregaon- Elgar Parishad Caste Violence Case, has filed a writ petition in Bombay High Court to quash the terminology “and all its formations and front organizations” attached to the banned CPI (Maoist) in the first schedule of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
He claims that the “vagueness” of the terminology is used as a tool to circumvent due process wherein the State does not notify a particular organization as banned under the UAP Act but investigating agencies keep using the ‘front organization’ card with impunity and no oversight, especially to oppose bail. Anand Teltumbde, an accused in the Elgar Parishad Maoist links case, has filed a writ petition in Bombay High Court seeking that a provision under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) to brand certain groups as a front for banned or terrorist organisations be quashed as it was bad in law.
The UAPA provides for the declaration of an association as unlawful and for the listing of organisations in the first schedule of the Act as “terrorist organisations”. Read more
