‘This too shall pass’: Sudha Bharadwaj’s daughter writes to her on her birthday

It was the second time, on Friday, that trade unionist and human rights lawyer Sudha Bharadwaj, lodged at Pune’s Yerwada jail for her alleged involvement in the Bhima Koregaon violence, spent her birthday away from home. In an emotional letter, her 22-year-old daughter, Maaysha, expressed how proud she is of her mother, and assured her that this too shall pass.

Today thousands of laborers of Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha-Mazdoor Karyakarta Committee (CMM-MKC) and Pragatisheel Cement Shramik Sangh (PCSS) came out on the streets of Bhilai (Chhattisgarh).
Speakers in the meeting said that nowadays the right of the workers to speak up is being taken away and that this is an attack on the right of freedom of expression. They also said that they stand in solidarity with advocate Sudha Bhardwaj who spoke on the rights of workers and who was arrested under UAPA. They criticised that she has not been released on bail even after one year and that this directly violates democratic values.

At 6:30 AM on 11 September 2019, the Maharashtra police without warrant illegally raided Prof. Babu’s residence. Calling him a suspect in the Bhima Koregoan case, the police detained Prof. Babu, and his partner Prof. Jenny Rowena for over six hours while searching the premises. They left having seized a variety of Prof. Babu’s personal belongings; some books, a laptop, some pen-drives, hard-drives, etc. Thankfully, Prof. Babu and Prof. Rowena are safe and unharmed but nonetheless deeply disturbed by the morning’s developments and what may follow.

Statement by Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA)

Today morning at 6:30 am, the house of Dr. Hany Babu who lives in Noida, was raided by a contingent of Pune Police for six hours without a search warrant. They searched the entire house and took away all electronic devices, laptops, pen drives, mobile phone, etc. At the end of the search, the Pune Police claimed that the raid was in connection with the Bhima Koreagaon case.
