A special court in Pune on Monday denied activist and poet P Varavara Rao’s bail application in the Elgar Parishad case, PTI reported. Rao had sought temporary bail to visit his hometown to perform the post-death rituals of his sister-in-law who died on April 22. Rao is currently lodged in a prison facility in Pune.

The 79-year old renowned poet and public intellectual Varavara Rao, along with four others, was arrested by police on August 28, 2018 on fabricated charges and Supreme Court of India intervened and directed the police to keep all the arrested under ‘house arrest’, pending legal reliefs. Finally he was arrested on November 17, 2018 and imprisoned in Yerawada Central Prison, Pune since then.

The reported Maoist communications produced by the Pune police during their investigation into the ‘Elgaar Parishad’ and the subsequent Bhima-Koregaon clashes had nothing to incriminate poet-activist P. Varavara Rao, submitted the defence counsel for the jailed activist.
