A Division Bench of Justices R D Dhanuka and V G Bisht on Friday heard a petition by activist Vernon Gonsalves (61) and professor Teltumbde (68), who were co-accused Varavara Rao’s co-inmates at Taloja Central Jail, seeking they should be tested for Covid-19 for being in close contact with Rao.

Hany Babu has been arrested. Even though the news was not surprising, it shocked me. It is unsettling to think that we will no longer walk past a class overflowing with students with Hany Babu inside, that we do not know how long it will take to bump into him again in the corridors of Delhi University’s Arts Faculty.

Despite the surging cases of COVID-19 in both Delhi and Mumbai, Prof. Babu of the Department of English in Delhi University was summoned as a witness and forced by the NIA to travel to Mumbai after being denied the option of video conferencing.

Granting the week-long custody, special judge AT Wankhede said that looking at the nature of the offences and allegations levelled against Babu, the demand of police custody remand by the investigating officer was well founded. “The allegations made against the accused are of serious nature. It is alleged that the accused is having connections and links with banned outfit CPI (M). The investigating officer wants to confront him with various facts established from the other accused,” the court said.
