Statement condemning concerted persecution of democratic rights activists

On 28th August, 2018 the Pune Police swooped down on prominent rights activists of the country: Sudha Bharadwaj, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, Gautam Navalakha, and Varavara Rao. They were to be taken to Pune on the fabricated charge of being linked to CPI (Maoist) party and funding Elgar Parishad. At the same time, premises of Stan Swamy and Anand Teltumbde were also raided, and both have been shown as “suspected accused” under various sections of the UAPA. All of the arrested and accused are long-standing contributors to various public discussion fora, including Sanhati, espousing their commitment to the people and democracy.

Anyone who criticises the government is branded Naxal or Maoist and, on this basis, their homes are raided, they are arrested and sent to jail. Using the violence led by Brahmanical forces at Bhima-Koregaon as an excuse, the BJP-RSS is trying to silence the people raising questions about the fundamental rights of common people, be it issues of unemployment, condition of impoverished farmers, atrocities committed on dalits, or the murder of people belonging to minority communities all over the country.

The arrests of human rights activists and lawyers on August 28 and earlier on June 6, 2018 are all part of a wider theatre of Hindutva’s state-sponsored repression on those demanding democratic rights and freedoms for the most marginalised of Indian citizens. What began with Bhima-Koregaon had actually begun long back, with the atrocities against Dalits and Adivasis crossing the political threshold, such as those in Una and Saharanpur, as well as the ‘institutional murder’ of Rohith Vemula in January 2016.

Maharashtra police held a press conference in Mumbai on August 31, 2018. Additional Director-General (law and order) of Maharashtra police Mr. Parambir Singh told the media that in relation to the incident of Bhima-Koregaon, initially a FIR was lodged on January 8, 2018. According to him the name of Stan Swamy was added in the aforesaid FIR on August 23 along with the names of Arun Fereira, Varavara Rao, Vernon Gonsalvez, Sudha Bhardwaj, Gautam Navlakha and Anand Teltumbde.

Coordination of Democratic Rights Organisations (CDRO) condemns the raid and arrests of democratic rights activists in Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ranchi and Goa by Maharashtra police on 28th of August under the pretext of investigation in connection with the Bhima Koregaon case. Following the arrests of five academics, lawyers and activists in June, the second wave of arrests have expanded to include writers and journalists as well as the lawyers of those fighting for the release of those arrested in June.

People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) strongly condemns and denounces the arrests under the draconian UAPA of:
1. Sudha Bharadwaj, PUCL National Secretary
2. Gautam Navalakha of PUDR,
3. Prof. Anand Teltumbde of CPDR,
4. Vernon Gonsalves and Arun Ferreira, advocates, and
5. VaraVara Rao, noted poet and rights activist.
PUCL also denounces the simultaneous multi-city raids conducted today, 28th August 2018 in a concerted and pre-meditated manner across the country at the premises of other eminent human rights activists.

Activist Vernon Gonsalves: A morning under house arrest

Activist Vernon Gonsalves returned home on Thursday morning after a 48-hour ordeal that started at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, when his house was raided by the Pune police. Mr Gonsalves and four other activists were arrested under the various sections of the IPC and the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed that the five be placed under house arrest until September 6.
