The event took place exactly four years after violence had broken out in the area, leading to the death of a youth.
An event to mark the 204th anniversary of the Battle of Bhima Koregaon at the Jaystambh in Perne village in Pune district remained peaceful on Saturday. But as a large number of visitors turned up at the ‘military monument’, social distancing was not maintained and the Covid-prevention norms laid down by the government went for a toss.

Rights activist Gautam Navlakha, an accused in the Bhima-Koregaon case lodged in the anda cell of Taloja Central Prison, made a handwritten application before a special court on Thursday, seeking that he be allowed an hour of fresh air and sun in the prison premises.
He, along with his co-accused, were produced before the special court on Thursday when he submitted the plea.

The meaning of mercy often shines in its absence, as this story of 92-year-old Anusaya Teltumbde bears out. Born in and then married into an agriculture labour family, Anusaya gave birth to eight children. The youngest of them, Praveen, a professor, died in 2009; her sixth child, Milind, a Maoist commander, was gunned down last month. At his cremation were present Mama Teltumbde and her surviving children barring the eldest of them, Anand.

Anand Teltumbde, Dalit scholar and accused in the Bhima Koregaon – Elgar Parishad case has sought the special NIA court’s permission for temporary bail to visit his 90-year-old mother for 15 days following brother – Milind’s – death in an encounter.
A telephone conversation earlier permitted by the court did not materialise.
Milind, an alleged Maoist leader was killed in an encounter by security personnel in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district along with 26 others.

The Special NIA Court has allowed Dalit scholar Anand Teltumbde a telephone call to his mother for five minutes on loud speaker after his brother and alleged Maoist leader Milind Teltumbde’s encounter killing by security personnel in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district.
In his plea to the Special NIA court, Teltumbde said his ninety-year-old mother is in a state of shock and bereavement after Milind’s demise and therefore he may be permitted a telephone call.

Telugu poet Varavara Rao, an accused in the 2018 Elgar Parishad case, told the special NIA court in Mumbai on Tuesday that he was shifting from a high society flat in Mumbai to an ashram-like facility in Bandra as he was unable to afford rent.
Advocate Niraj Yadav, appearing for Rao, said his client would shift to an ashram-like facility which is right behind actor Shah Rukh Khan’s bungalow, Mannat.

… The Dalit intellectual and activist, Anand Teltumbde, had lamented for long that reservation has benefited about 6 per cent of Dalits, leaving the rest in abject poverty. One of the consequences of this is that this privileged minority among Dalits begins to be characterized more by its new-found class mobility rather than by caste-based concerns. It is not surprising that Anand’s incarceration has not mobilized Dalit-Bahujan organizations; most of them believe that articulating such ‘abstract’ structural issues brings no concrete benefits to the Dalit-Bahujan cause.
